Installation Information
What's the difference between a post cap and a finial?
The post cap is literally a cap or hat that sits on top of a fence or gate post. Finials are decorative ornaments that sit on top of post caps. When shopping for post caps you will see that only some will accept a finial due to the cap design.
Measuring Your Post for a Proper Cap Fit:
When measuring your existing posts, note the exact measurement. Do not add anything to your measurement. When ordering please use this dimension to select the proper cap.
POST CAP CARE AND INSTALLATION
Construction: All our caps are constructed using stainless steel fasteners.
Materials: Our quality post caps are made from the best grade of clear, all heart, vertical-grain redwood or western red cedar.
Installation: For a nail-free look, simply apply an exterior marine adhesive (we recommend 3M 5200) to the top of the post, slip the post cap over, straighten and walk away! Stainless steel finish nails may be used as an alternative, but are not necessary.
FINIAL CARE AND INSTALLATION
PREPARATION: All Nantucket Post Cap Co. finials are constructed of quality laminated clear redwood and should be sealed BEFORE installation with an oil base primer, paint, stain or preservative to ensure long life. These should be applied to all surfaces INCLUDING the base.
INSTALLATION: Finials are pre-drilled and are shipped with lag screws for easy installation
after sealing. The screws should be inserted first into the base of the finial using a pair of pliers
around the smooth section (not the threads). Then thread the finial with mounted lag screw into
the post. Pre-drilling the top of the post is optional and may aid in the installation. Exterior
caulking material can be applied to the base to ensure a tight fit if desired.
ARBORS AND PERGOLAS CARE AND INSTALLATION
Before you start, you will need:
- Arbor kit
- Exterior adhesive (not included) - We recommend 3M 5200 or PL 400
Instructions:
Step One: Preparing the Site
- Dig four 6 inch to 8 inch diameter holes that are 18 inches to 36 inches deep.
Step Two: Assembling the Posts and Lattice
- Check to be sure that the top of the posts are square.
- Predrill each lattice panel (four front and four back) for 3 inch galvanized screws.
- Assemble the arbor sides to the posts as shown in illustration 2, making sure that the post end with the hole is facing up.
- You can decide what the distance of the panel to the top of the post should be, depending on how you want the arbor to look.
- Install the caps onto the posts with the dowel pins and construction adhesive.
Step Three: Setting in Place
- Install both side panels in the ground, and plum up level.
- Set the spacing between the assembled panels to the same as the arbor size. For example, a 3 foot arbor would have a 3 foot space.
- Level the top of all the posts and set the heights to your desired height. The suggested height from the top of the post to ground level is from 5 feet to 5 feet 6 inches.
Step Four: Assembling the Arbor Top
- Assemble the arbor top and spindles as shown. You can use waterproof glue or a small amount of caulk in the predrilled holes in the arch.
- Position the assembled arbor onto the posts.
- Attach the arbor to the posts with eight #10 galvanized finish nails.
- Cover any seams with caulk
